Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent teacher conferences are this Thursday, Oct. 24th from 5-8 and Friday, Oct. 25th from 7:50-11:30.  If you have not made your appointment, please call or send a note soon.  When at your conference, make sure you talk with your child’s teacher about concerns you may have.  Here is a list of items that you could discuss at your conference:  What can I do to stay more involved in my child’s academic progress?  What skills are being addressed at this time?  How is my child keeping up in class?  How does my child get along with others?  What types of testing should be expected this year?  What are your homework policies and how is my child following them?  What are my child’s strengths and weaknesses?  Asking questions and staying actively involved in your child’s education can make a big difference in their academic success.  See you at conferences!!!

The Topic of Bullying

Definition:

Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance.  The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time.

In order to be considered bullying, the behavior must be aggressive and include:

*An imbalance of Power: Kids who bully use their power- such as physical strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity- to control or harm others.

*Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than once or have the potential to happen more than once.

Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.

WHEN and WHERE:

Bullying can occur during or after school hours.  While most reported bullying happens in the school building, a significant percentage also happens in places like on the playground or on the bus.  It can also happen traveling to or from school, in the youth’s neighborhood, or on the internet.

How a positive home/school relationship can help:

Bullying can threaten students’ physical and emotional safety at school and can negatively impact their ability to learn.  The best way to address bullying is to stop it before it starts.  It is important for everyone to work together to send a unified message against bullying.  Parents and school staff can help to create a school culture of acceptance, tolerance, and respect.  By working together and having meaningful conversations about individual differences, we can stop bullying behavior and teach our children a valuable life lesson.

Welcome Back Valley Elementary

It is hard to believe that summer is over, but the students at SRV Elementary are well on their way to getting back in the grove of school.  It was wonderful to see and talk with so many of you at registration.  If we have not met, please stop by sometime so that we can.  The school year is off to a great start.  Students are hard at work adjusting to the routines of the school day.  We have a wonderful staff that are excited about the year and working hard to challenge each and every student.  Within the next week, teachers will have sent home a note explaining the expectations of their classrooms.  Please make sure that you go over this with your child.  Parent/teacher/school communication is essential in student success.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us or stop by to see all the wonderful things happening at Spoon River Valley Elementary.
